Building connections between arts funders in philanthropy
According to PFC’s 2018 Snapshot of Foundation Giving, arts and culture ranked sixth among areas of giving activity by Canada’s 150 largest grantmaking foundations. This is clearly a significant area of funding focus for philanthropy, however, opportunities for arts funders to convene, share insights, and discuss meaningful strategies in support of the sector are rare, and no formalized group in Canada exists to support this work.

Rozsa Foundation, Metcalf Foundation, and Azrieli Foundation are co-hosting a conversation on the intersection of arts & culture and philanthropy in Canada. These three foundations have been collaborating over the past year to invest in meaningful national research in the arts and strategizing around how more formal associations of arts funders can leverage our collective philanthropic work for greater impact in the future.

This session is open to anybody who is currently, or is considering, funding in Canada’s arts and culture sectors, and who might be interested in becoming a part of a larger conversation in this area moving forward.

Since February 24, Ukraine has been subject to a brutal, ongoing invasion by Russia. The initial months of the war led to an unprecedented level of generosity from around the world, mainly for humanitarian relief. But even as the war grinds on in parts of the country, there is a great need to adapt, address near and medium-term non-humanitarian needs, and where possible, rebuild. What are some of the main areas of need? How can philanthropy be the most helpful?

Join colleagues from Canadian and US foundations to explore these questions and learn about a new North American platform for ongoing convenings to help philanthropy make strategic investments that will enhance Ukraine’s future as a democratic, prosperous European state.

The Investment Roundtable was created as an initiative of the Lawson Foundation in Toronto, a PFC member. PFC is now hosting and managing the group. Its goal is to bring together foundation board members, investment committees, and staff to create a space for discussion, brainstorming, collaboration, and partnership.

There continues to be an ongoing and increasing awareness and scrutiny on the role of philanthropic foundations, especially relating to the assets they manage. Further, an increase in the disbursement quota (from 3.5 to 5%), a downturn in the financial markets, the war in Ukraine, the volatility in commodities (oil and gas, wheat etc.), and the ongoing climate crisis, makes for a very complex world and market. The goal the Investment Roundtable is to convene participants, in person, to hear their investment updates, and explore common topics of interest.

Philanthropy is increasingly criticized for its lack of meaningful impact, for its blind spots, for its privileged position and use of power. Are the criticism based on facts or widely overblown? Two researchers with recent books on philanthropy will engage in a conversation: Dr. Beth Breeze the author of In Defence of Philanthropy and Dr. Emmas Saunders-Hastings, a Canadian based in the US and the author of Private Virtues, Public Vices: Philanthropy and Democratic Equality. will address the key criticisms as well as the similarities and differences between the American, European and Canadian contexts.

* A simultaneous interpretation service (French and English) is available during this session. If you wish to use it, headsets are available at the conference registration desk (Room 523A). ID will be required.

Philanthropic leaders and organizations are on a journey towards respect and reciprocity with Indigenous communities across Canada.  Seven years after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the development of the Philanthropic Community’s Declaration of Action, progress has been uneven. Several promising indigenous led initiatives have been launched but indicators of wellbeing have barely improved. We collectively face an incredible opportunity – and a responsibility- towards Reconciliation by embracing the principles, norms, and standards of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. At our opening plenary, esteemed local and national Indigenous leaders will engage in a conversation on philanthropy today, where our sector might fit, and what we should consider when it comes to our relationships with Indigenous communities across Canada and advancing justice.

Can foundations really learn to trust ? Case studies from the field // Les fondations peuvent-elles véritablement apprendre à faire davantage confiance? Études de cas du terrain (CS1)

While trust-based philanthropy has been a trending topic for the past few years, it often remains at the concept stage. In this session, you will get to hear from a diverse panel of grantmakers who have started to put the theory into practice in different ways and at different levels. They will share the challenges they have faced on that journey, as well as their successes when trying to push the boundaries of traditional grantmaking to promote relationships built on trust and equity. This moderated discussion will be followed by smaller group conversations.
Related resources:

How can Canadian foundations best support youth-led organizations and movements? (CS2)

The role of Foundations has evolved from a donor relationship to that of an active participant in advancing social and environmental initiatives. This year Ashoka Canada will release the ‘The Foundation Academy for Collaboration on Youth Allyship’ research report, as part of the wider Foundation Academy of Collaboration series; which explores avenues to enhance impact of the philanthropy sector.   There is a deep desire amongst Canadian Foundations to enhance youth agency and support meaningful youth engagement. ‘The Foundation Academy for Collaboration on Youth Allyship’ report outlines how Foundations might connect and effectively support young changemakers who are working to achieve positive social and environmental impact. With evidence gathered both from academic literature and from interviews with young changemakers, this report outlines leading practices for Foundations to act as meaningful allies and collaboratively advance change. This interactive session will invite attendees to explore the key insights from the research and hear first-hand from young changemakers, experts in youth engagement and philanthropists involved in the Foundation Academy for Collaboration on Youth Allyship. Attendees will have the opportunity through breakout sessions to gain an understanding of how to improve their own youth allyship practices and how to disseminate these actionable learnings into the broader community.

Learn more with Ashoka's presentation on how Foundations can best support youth-led organizations and movements to amplify their impact.

How can sector actors and government policy advance impact investing in Canada? (CS4)

This panel will present the experiences of both Canadian and American foundations in integrating impact investing to achieve their mission, along with government and legal considerations. The discussion will highlight the positioning of foundations in Canada to leverage their assets to invest in social impact, along with some of the challenges and policy considerations to enable this approach. With all the great work that foundations do on the granting side, with both subject-matter expertise and networks, how can this be further leveraged through unique financial instruments like tailored financing, including equity or debt to achieve their charitable purposes?

There have been many important developments in the regimes governing the non-profit and charitable sector in Canada over the past year, from the increase in the disbursement quota to new rules for partnerships between charities and non-qualified donees. At this session, we will focus on hearing from sector leaders instrumental in the development of these new policies, with opportunities to ask questions to help ensure the network understands the new regulatory landscape, how it impacts our work in philanthropy, and what we should be thinking about as we plan our activities for impact in today's landscape and beyond.

The recent awakening on issues of systemic anti-racism and anti-oppression has prompted an unprecedented philanthropic response among corporations, with more funding going to Black and Indigenous groups in the last two years than in the previous two decades combined. At the same time there is a long overdue reflection on the practices and beliefs held within companies that are contributing to inequities in Canada.

This session will present insights and themes from an upcoming study on JAIDE (Justice, Access, Inclusion, Diversity, Equity) within CSR and the corporate community impact profession, including the beliefs, culture, and practices that inhibit or enable social change. Findings draw from a survey of Canada’s largest companies, interviews with diverse professionals, and focus groups with young leaders, and offer insights and recommendations from those traditionally excluded from CSR decision tables on how companies can better advance philanthropy in service of JAIDE.

Following the presentation, join Mide and Mark for an intimate conversation on the approach to applying a JAIDE lens to corporate community engagement at RBC and how companies can advance social impact in light of the challenges presented in the research. After the discussion, we will invite participants to reflect on the practices within their own foundation, and participate in group discussions on how to move forward in advancing JAIDE approaches like participatory grantmaking and trust based philanthropy.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Family Philanthropy: Engaging the Next Generation // Philanthropie familiale : Comment engager la prochaine génération (CS11)
THE NEXT GENERATION

There have been more than a few think-pieces about the fear that younger generations don’t have the appetite for “traditional philanthropy.” But Gen Xers, Millennials and Gen Z are changing the world in innovative and exciting ways. They are well informed and engaged in the world around us. They are driven by the causes they feel are important, which affects the way they give. The next generation wants to give and they are willing to commit if they can see that their offerings will have impact, both on themselves and their community. At this session, hear from leaders from multiple generations in different places and spaces across the philanthropic ecosystem about their journeys and about how succession planning, using philanthropy as the catalyst, can be the glue that brings people together.

Through this panel, attendees will be introduced to several Indigenous philanthropic leaders and gain deeper insights into Indigenous approaches to philanthropy and the essential role these organizations play in leading far reaching socio-economic impact.

To learn more: Investing in Indigenous Philanthropy through Reciprocity

Hilary worked for two decades with leaders of foundations across Canada. Based on interviews with private funders - large and small, long established and newly formed - she provides an insider’s perspective in a forthcoming book on the ways that foundations are evolving and the varied roles they play, as convenors, advocates, brokers, or partners. In this session she will make a case for the valuable role private philanthropy plays in addressing the challenges of our times. She will be joined in conversation by Michael Alberg-Seberich of Wider Sense, a Berlin-based consultancy, who will provide his own perspective on some of the similar changes occurring in European philanthropy. Their conversation will focus on the current debates about the legitimacy of organized philanthropy in an era of increasing social division and inequality.

Montreal's network of alleys is extremely diverse, both in terms of the physical shape and socio-demographic characteristics of the residents. As a result of incredible citizen initiative and mobilization, and thanks in part fo SEM (Société écocitoyenne de Montréal), green alley projects have been popping up throughout the city. These are sustainable development projects on a human scale where citizens implement a democratic process leading to consensus-building. At each step, the three dimensions of sustainable development (economic, environmental and social) are considered. It is this appropriation of a public space, which is always creative, unique and original, which makes each of Montreal's 376 "green" alleys so special. At SEM, they see alleys as spaces of opportunity: opportunities for positive, environmental and community change. This is a goal they wish to achieve: to combine the greening of urban areas with the strengthening of the social fabric. SEM is proud to have completed 24 (soon to be 25) green alleys in the Sainte-Marie district alone. The creation of green alleys is possible thanks to the collaboration of the citizens and the borough of Ville-Marie.
This guided tour will be on foot.
